The permanent exhibition is divided into five departments. The Treasure Troves present the museum's collections of coins, medals, decorations, silver and weapons. The Prehistory of Finland is Finland's largest archaeological exhibition. The Realm tells of the history of Finnish culture and society from the Middle Ages until the beginning of the 20th century. A Land and Its People presents rural life in Finland before industrialisation. The Past Century features independent Finland and its uniform and international culture in the 20th century. Temporary exhibitions can be found on the main floor as well as on the third floor.

The museum's information centre (2nd floor) has a reference library on the themes of the exhibitions and general material on Finland's cultural heritage. The various parts of the exhibition multimedia are also available for a closer look in the information centre. The Museum Shop is on the first floor.

The café and auditorium are on the ground floor.
